Consequence Interventions

In February's newsletter we discussed the importance of Antecedent Strategies (i.e., getting ahead of the behavior to make a desired behavior more likely to occur or an undesired behavior less likely to occur).

This month we want to discuss the IMPORTANCE of what to do after the desired or undesired behavior is displayed! The response you have to your child’s behavior, whether their behavior be desired or undesired, is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

Think of it this way, the antecedent strategy sets your child up for success while the consequence strategy, if done properly, ensures the maintenance of that behavior. If you go to work for 8 hours but then do not get paid for those 8 hours, how likely are you to show up to work the next day? The CONSEQUENCE of getting paid is what keeps you at the job. The same goes for targeted behaviors of your child. This doesn’t mean you have to pay them $$$ but it means your response to their behavior MATTERS SIGNIFICANTLY!!
